Using agility to teach focus, self-control and confidence in all dogs, including ones with behavior problems

Heather Adams, KPA CTP, CBATI, talks about the sport of agility and how it can help dogs learn to focus, as well as gain self-control and confidence, while providing a fun outlet for dog/owner teams. Whether you use agility for fun or join the competitive side of the sport, it offers huge benefits that go beyond having a good time running around the ring. Heather discusses how she incorporates agility training with clients’ dogs that have certain behavior issues, as a means for long term positive change. She talks about getting started in the sport, what to look for in a trainer, when to start your dog, what type of training is required, and realistic expectations. She also discusses the basics of agility equipment, an agility match, agility organizations, and the best way to get started.

Heather Adams, KPA CTP, CBATI, is the owner of Clever Paws, a reward based dog training and agility facility in western New York, between Buffalo and Rochester. She graduated from the Karen Pryor Academy for Animal Training and Behavior in 2008. She is a Certified Behavior Adjustment Training Instructor and uses BAT techniques in her reward based training. She is a graduate of the Teacher Certification Program at the University at Buffalo and has practical experience teaching biology and science to all age groups, in addition to over 11 years teaching people how to train and rehabilitate their dogs. Heather is uniquely qualified to help dog owners use the fun sport of agility for dogs with behavior issues.

Kim Merritt is a serial entrepreneur who started her first company, Kim’s Khocolate, at eleven years of age. As a teenager, she was discovered by Guy Kawasaki who invited her to make custom Khocolate for Apple. Kim went on to do business with The Rolling Stones, AT&T, MCI, Becton Dickinson, Bausch & Lomb, and Range Rover. Her second company, an e-commerce play, sold brand name dinnerware and home decor items across North America. She founded Good Dog in a Box with her sister, professional dog trainer Jenn Merritt, CPDT-KA. Her love of dogs and kids has pushed her to develop and co-develop a number of products, online training courses, and curriculums revolving around dog bite prevention and dog safety. Her latest endeavor, Good Dog Pro, is a subscription based online education system and community for dog professionals.
