Welcome to The Good Dog Blog

A little bit about us

Jenn Merritt & Kim Merritt-Butler Cofounders of Good Dog in a Box

Welcome everyone, to The Good Dog Blog! Jenn and I are very excited to launch this site and our new blog, where we’ll be sharing resources, training tips, products and professional advice for families with kids and dogs.

So what’s the backstory here? A year ago, Jenn and I discovered a horrifying statistic. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) reports that 4.5 Million people are bitten by dogs each year in the United States. Of the 800,000 people who receive medical care for dog bites, at least half are children, according to the ASPCA. A large majority of those children are between the ages of 5 and 9. That’s really scary.

In addition, 3.9 million dogs enter animal shelters every year. Of those, 1.2 million dogs a year are euthanized. 80% of those dogs were healthy, trainable, and could have been adopted. According to a recent study conducted by the National Council on Pet Population and Policy (NCPPSP), the #10 reason for dog relinquishment to animal shelters was dog bites. In addition, 96% of dogs relinquished to animal shelters have not received any obedience training.

Does this mean there’s a lot of “bad” dogs out there? No. But better trained dogs and better educated kids means happier, healthier families with better dog/owner relationships. Jenn and I got our heads together to figure out how we could help families with kids and dogs and Good Dog in a Box was born.

We’ve got a lot of great things in the pipeline, but the first step is The Good Dog Blog.
